Truth

1901 - 1908

Truth made its 1901 debut in Salt Lake City, offering Utah's booming capital hard-hitting local reporting and progressive social commentary. Truth developed an identity as an urban weekly, an early antecedent of the alternative weekly, which 90 years later would become very popular. Truth carved out a middle ground between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mouthpiece, the Deseret News, and the Salt Lake Tribune, which was against the Mormon Church. The Truth neither acquiesced to every instance of Mormon influence nor bashed the church at every opportunity. In 1908, Parley Jensen took over as editor and J. H. Garrett as manager. The new team renamed the publication The Western Weekly and promised that the newspaper would remain independent, being the organ of no party or faction. Read more.
